‘Assassin’s Creed’ Collection: Is Ubisoft The Ultimate Troll Or A Genius?

The Assassin’s Creed collection is here, but it’s not what we’d thought. When Ubisoft registered the domain for that particular phrase, there were hopes that it meant a remastered version of some of their most loved games for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Now that the site has been completed, it turns out that the Assassin’s Creed collection is only related to the games. It’s actually a collection of beautifully crafted figurines resembling many of the protagonists from the series. The figures also come with booklets that provide details on each of these characters. Ubisoft has actually been teasing this idea ever since they released Black Flag, the first game in the series where the protagonist wasn’t actually an assassin until near the end.

In Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, you are a new employee of Abstergo, a fictional entertainment company mirroring Ubisoft. As you sit in front of an Animus console for hours and get paid for it (probably every gamer’s dream), your work earns you the bonus of collecting various figurines based on characters you encounter in the simulation.

Among the collection, which is being sold as a subscription, are figurines based on Altair, Ezio, Connor, Haytham Kenway, Cesare Borgia, Shay Cormack, and Jacob and Evie Frye. However, the collection is missing Edward Kenway, Adewale, Arno, and Aveline. There doesn’t appear to be a reason why some were chosen over others. Cesare Borgia was the son of the villain in Assassin’s Creed II, and Edward Kenway was the father of Haytham, and grandfather to Connor.

Two of the figurines represent Templars as well. Haytham was one in Assassin’s Creed III, while Shay Cormack became one as the game progressed.

However, these figurines, and their accompanying booklets and stands, were not what gamers were hoping for. They don’t even work like Nintendo’s Amiibos. What most of us wanted from the Assassin’s Creed collection was all of the games from Altair’s adventure all the way through those of Shay Cormack, remastered and playable natively on current generation consoles.

I contacted someone through the online chat on the website, and even the administrators have no idea if Ubisoft is ever planning to make a remastered collection for Assassin’s Creed I through Rogue. The gaming publisher is keeping quiet about nearly everything involved regarding future releases.

All we know for now is that Ubisoft is focusing on the upcoming Michael Fassbender film with a whole new character fighting to possibly liberate Spain. There is also a game coming in 2017 based in Egypt as Ubisoft re-evaluates their franchise.

There won’t be a game released in 2016 due to the failure of Unity to launch with the expected success. It was mostly due to Unity’s glitchy release that many gamers didn’t trust Ubisoft enough to make Syndicate the roaring success they felt it should have been. Syndicate was fun, almost on par with Assassin’s Creed II, but we were tired of Ubisoft’s methods by then.

If the Assassin’s Creed collection had been PlayStation 4 and Xbox One remasters, Ubisoft might have made a decent amount like several other major developers are doing. BioShock, the Batman: Arkham games, Dishonored, and Dead Island have already led the charge initiated by Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us.

It seems that Ubisoft is doing the same thing Metallica did and not releasing remastered material due to the fact that they already released it once. Gamers still eagerly await the chance to see the Assassin’s Creed collection become a set of games.
