‘The Vampire Diaries’: Nina Dobrev Will Return In Ian Somerhalder’s Flashbacks

Vampire Diaries showrunner Julie Plec recently confirmed that Nina Dobrev is going to make her comeback in Season 8, but she will only be there in flashbacks.

Dobrev and her ex-boyfriend, Ian Somerhalder, broke the hearts of their fans when they announced their split. Many believed that the show’s excitement level was maintained by the ongoing affair of Dobrev and Somerhalder. But when the duo announced their breakup, they not only broke the hearts of their fan, they also made the supernatural show come face to face with poor ratings.

Dobrev left The Vampire Diaries after Season 6 to pursue her career in the film industry. During her interview with Michael Pena for Interview Magazine, the actress stated that she had decided many seasons ago that she won’t be extending her contract once it ends. Furthermore, she considered it as a learning stage of her life.

“I had decided years before that I’d go the run of my contract and I wouldn’t extend, but it was a surprise for everyone else that didn’t know that. I always knew that I’d signed up for a certain amount of time and I fulfilled it. I had a great experience, but everything has to come to an end and this was my time. It’s like high school, you do four years and then you move onto the college.”

This being said, showrunner Plec recently confirmed that The CW is indeed bringing their protagonist back to the show. During her interview with TV Line, Plec stated that The CW is going to make it possible for fans of TVD to get to see their favorite star back in the series.

At first, The CW wanted to bring Dobrev’s character of Elena at the beginning of the show, but Plec wants the actress to reprise her role at the end of the season, as it will help in creating the hype.

“Obviously, things can change throughout time, if the show goes on longer than we expect it to, or if we all collectively decide it would be fun to bring her back earlier, and she wanted to. But in my opinion, she was very clear about what she wanted the next step in her life to be, and she’s doing a great job of achieving that. So I’m sticking with my side of the plan, which is to bring her back at the very end.”

According to Movie News Guide, the actress will make her comeback to the show – but only in Somerhalder’s flashbacks. This way, she won’t have to shoot major portions, and her presence will not jeopardize the ongoing storyline.

A source close to The Vampire Diaries stated to Hollywood Life that it is TVD that has made Dobrev and Somerhalder stars, and if the show is facing its worst, then the stars should reprise their individual roles to save it from getting canceled.

“When the show ends Nina will be a part of it some way shape or form. She is 10,000 percent coming back. The show did so much for their careers and put them on the map. For Julie Plec and the other writers and creators. They feel like they owe it to them to suck it up and send the show off any way they want to send it off.”

Julie Plec has started the production of The Vampire Diaries season 8, along with Ian Somerhalder and the rest of the cast and crew. However, still there is no confirmation whether the Nina Dobrev will be able to make her comeback for Season 8 or not. Do you wish to see her back in the show with her ex-boyfriend?
