Johnny Depp Seeks Massive N.D.A. In Divorce From Amber Heard

Since Amber Heard filed for divorce from Johnny Depp, there has been a constant flow of grievances and allegations made by Heard, but not much in the way of a response from Johnny.

That may be changing now, as a recent filing from the Pirates of the Caribbean actor’s attorney reveals the first responses to Amber’s complaints in the form of a request for a nondisclosure agreement. If granted, this agreement would seek to keep details of the divorce proceedings private and limit the ability of either party to capitalize on anything associated with the divorce.

In reporting on Depp’s request, People magazine may be revealing two reasons for the request of a nondisclosure agreement that would span financial information, witness testimony, and any statements offered by expert witnesses. First, Depp may be concerned that the details of his marriage to Heard and subsequent divorce will be used by others as a way of capitalizing on the actor’s life. Second, Johnny seems more concerned that Amber herself will use details of the divorce to further profit from the dissolution of her marriage from Depp.

“Amber’s need for financial information to resolve this case is distinct from the public’s appetite for celebrity divorce,” states the written request made to the court. “This case has been extraordinarily public since its inception. There have been daily articles in the domestic and foreign press about this proceeding and the parties’ lives.”

The petition made on Depp’s behalf also draws attention to the fact that every detail of the divorce has been public fodder ever since Heard first made the initial filing, making it one of the most publicized divorces in recent history. It is also stated that Johnny’s attorney has contacted Ms. Heard with a request that she sign a confidentiality agreement, regarding the divorce, but the actress has refused to comply. Amber has refused to cite any reason for opposing the confidentiality clause.

The request for an N.D.A. by Depp’s attorney also alleges that Amber Heard, acting either on her own or in cooperation with her own attorney, has “participated in at least one media story which contained specific provisions from prior settlement communications.”

Additionally, court documents reveal that Johnny’s legal team is contesting some requests made by Heard’s party. While Johnny acknowledges Heard’s need for specific financial documents, Us Weekly reported that Depp objects to some requests on the basis that the requested documents don’t have a direct bearing on the case. The court request says some of the documents Amber is requesting have to do with information that predates Johnny’s relationship with her, as well as other documents already protected by third party confidentiality agreements.

“He is willing to produce the documents necessary for Amber’s evaluation of the relevant issues in this case, such as division of community estate and spousal support,” says the petition made on Depp’s behalf. “He has asked, however, that a confidentially agreement be executed prior to the production of documents in order to protect the parties’ privacy.”

The major point of this petition is that Johnny had approached Amber and requested that she willingly sign the agreement to protect both parties from having their ordeal detailed in the press throughout the divorce. When Heard declined to sign the agreement and failed to give a reason, Mr. Depp felt compelled to ask the court to force the issue of the nondisclosure agreement, which will now also prevent Heard, herself, from talking publicly about the details of the divorce.
