Washington, D.C. (AHN) – A Southern California college student who was imprisoned for a short period in Iran has returned to Los Angeles this week, officials said.

Twenty-nine-year-old Esha Momeni was jailed and then banned from leaving Iran for nine months arrived at Los Angeles International Airport on Tuesday.

Momeni, an Iranian-American, was working on her master’s thesis on women’s rights for a program at California State University Northridge.

“It is wonderful news to learn that Cal State Northridge graduate student Esha Momeni has returned safely to Los Angeles,” Cal State Northridge President Jolene Koester said in a statement yesterday.

“All of us in the CSU Northridge community have been looking forward to this day. I have met briefly with Esha, and she appears to be in fine spirits. I know that she is looking forward to resuming her graduate studies in a few days,” he added.

Momeni was charged with acting against national security and was held in solitary confinement for 25 days in Evin prison.

She was released on bail after the sentence. Iranian officials then confiscated her passport and forbade her to leave the country.
