Kelly Evans Quits Twitter: CNBC Anchor Says Social Media ‘Ultimately Became Dizzying And Exhausting’

CNBC anchor Kelly Evans recently made a bold move when it came to social media this week.

The 31-year-old financial journalist decided to leave Twitter behind — a huge step towards her goal of making a clean break from social media overall.

“Last Friday, I deactivated my Twitter account, thereby severing an eight-year relationship that had become a big part of my professional — and personal — life. Perhaps too big.”

Evans opened up about her reasons for leaving social media in a published article Thursday. Even though her decision to leave social media may seem abrupt, USA Today reports that Kelly Evans left Instagram and Facebook last year. Within her explanation, Kelly Evans discussed the overall distracting nature of social media which eventually led her to leaving it behind.

“It ultimately became dizzying and exhausting to me. I felt lost in endless spools of social media, all the while emails by the thousands were piling up, phone calls were getting lost in the mix, and messages from the most important people in my life were getting drowned out in the din. I was more responsive to comments on Instagram than to my own closest friends and family.”

What does Kelly Evans do now without social media in order to stay up-to-date on current events? She claims that reading the newspaper has become the first thing on her daily to-do list instead of checking social media. In her own words, she’s “never felt better informed” by transitioning from the information superhighway back to the printed page for her news.

Kelly further claimed that the “seedier side of social media” played a role in her decision to quit using it. However, she made it clear that she did not blame the actual social media platforms themselves.

“Being constantly confronted with gross and bizarre comments from strangers was if anything an important reminder to me that not all the world is like my supportive family… I shut down social media because I needed to shut out online distractions and engage with the people, issues, and work right in front of me.”

Quite a few people have shared their reactions and responses to Kelly Evans’ decision to leave social media ironically on social media.

Twitter has definitely been in the limelight for the wrong reasons in recent weeks – especially with the negative bashing of actress Leslie Jones making headlines. Back in February, actor Stephen Fry made an interesting statement in a blog post of his own – comparing Twitter to a “secret bathing pool.”

According to Stephen, the pool is no longer enjoyable and engaging. On the contrary, it is “frothy with scum, clogged with weeds and littered with broken glass, sharp rocks and slimy rubbish.”

“If you don’t watch yourself, with every move you’ll end up being gashed, broken, bruised or contused. Even if you negotiate the sharp rocks you’ll soon feel that too many people have peed in the pool for you to want to swim there any more. The fun is over.”

Stephen Fry also stated that Twitter has become “a stalking ground for the sanctimonious self-righteous who love to second-guess, to leap to conclusions and be offended.”

With Kelly Evans deciding to leave Twitter, it would be interesting to see which other celebrities make the same decision in the future for similar reasons.
