The new season of Boardwalk Empire, HBO’s hit show about prohibition-era Atlantic City and the corrupt politicians and gangsters that run things, premieres this evening at 9 p.m. Eastern time.

The outstanding ensemble cast is led by Steve Buscemi, who plays Enoch (“Nucky”) Thompson, based on the actual Atlantic City political boss Enoch L. Johnson. Other actors in season 3 of the HBO series include Kelly MacDonald, Michael Stuhlbarg, Bobby Cannavale, Gretchen Mol, Michael Shannon, Michael Kenneth Williams, and Shea Whigham. Season 3 begins about one year after the events of the Season 2 finale.

As Wikipedia notes, “Boardwalk Empire has received widespread critical acclaim, particularly for its visual style and basis on historical figures, as well as for Buscemi’s lead performance.” The series is based on the book Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City by Nelson Johnson and was created by Terence Winter, who was a writer and producer on The Sopranos.

“Boardwalk Empire” follows the very well-connected Enoch “Nucky” Thompson (Steve Buscemi), who controls the famed Atlantic City boardwalk during the height of prohibition. Skilled at double-talk and keeping up appearances, Nucky spent most of the first two seasons being able to get other people to do his dirty work. Yet as the season’s promotional materials spell out “you can’t be half a gangster.”
