Los Angeles, CA (AHN) – Lt. Gov. John Garamendi put Santa Cruz County under a state of emergency Friday as a brush fire continue to burn out of control in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Garamendi issued the declaration in the absence of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was attending the funeral of his mother-in-law, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, in Massachusetts. The governor returns Saturday and will inspect the fire zone.

The fire has burned 2,800 acres and has forced 2,000 hillside residents to evacuate. Firefighters are struggling to reach the fire lines in tough terrain so helicopters are being used to drop water on the fire.

The fire raging in a heavily wooded, evergreen forest is threatening the towns of Swanton, Davenport and Bonny Doon.

Meanwhile, another fire in the Los Padres National Forest, 26 miles east of Santa Maria, also continue to rage Friday. The fire has sent residents of 150 homes in the Cottonwood Canyon area fleeing as 1,600 firefighters battle the blaze.
