We reported months ago that Sandy Dahl, widow of the ill-fated Flight 93 pilot Captain Jason Dahl, had passed away. New details surrounding her death have emerged, as coroners now believe that her death was accidental.

The 52-year-old 9/11 widow died in May of acute heart failure. According to the Jefferson County chief deputy coroner, the heart failure was due to the combined effects of alcohol and prescription drugs. Anti-depression, anti-anxiety, painkiller and tranquilizer drugs were found in her blood stream. A heart condition suffered by Dahl, right ventricular dysplasia, also contributed to her death, reports NY Daily.

Sandy Dahl’s husband, Jason Dahl, was the captain of the United Flight 93 that traveled from Newark, New Jersey to San Francisco. The plane went down in Pennsylvania thanks to the bravery of the passengers, who fought against their hijackers. Under terrorist control, the plane was thought to be headed for the White House or Capitol building in Washington D.C.

Sandy Dahl had founded a scholarship in honor of her fallen husband which assisted aspiring pilots pay for their education. She also regularly spoke in public on the heroism of the Flight 93 passengers. In an interview with the Denver Post last year, she said that she sometimes woke from nightmares regarding Flight 93, and that counselors had told her that she suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder. Her continued involvement in the building of the legacy around Flight 93 could have contributed to her depression.

“Normally, people have a memorial, and it’s behind them then. This is never going away,” she said.
