The professional wrestler and long-time commentator suffered the cardiac incident while behind the microphone ringside during the filming of Monday Night Raw. Lawler, 62, who competed in a tag team match about a half hour before collapsing at ringside, still wrestles in approximately 150 to 200 matches per year at various promotions around the country. Given wrestling’s usual dramatics, fans may have initially thought this was part of the show, but co-host Michael Cole explained to viewers that it was an actual medical emergency.

Lawler may have been clinically dead for 15-20 minutes before he was revived by defibrillator, but suffered no brain damage in the incident. He apparently has undergone an angioplasty to improve blood flow to his heart.

Jerry Lawler made his rise through the professional wrestling ranks in the 1970s, making a name for himself first in Memphis, Tennessee before moving on to the Mid-South Wrestling circuit and various other promotions such as AWA, ECW, WWF/WWE, and has held various championship belts. Lawler famously feuded with comedian Andy Kaufmann in the 1980s.

Watch Jerry Lawler, — who says he feels like the “bionic man” with all the wires still attached to him — from the Montreal hospital thank the “WWE universe” for their well wishes after his heart attack:
