Many recognize Metro 2033 as the dark, beautiful first-person shooter from Ukrainian developer 4A Games but it actually started off as a novel, penned by Russian author Dmitry Glukhovsky. Now, it looks like the novel will also be turning into a movie.

The Hollywood Reporter says that MGM has picked up the film rights to Metro 2033. The studio has tasked F. Scott Frazier, who penned the scripts for The Numbers Station and Warner Bros.’ Line of Sight, with writing the script.

Mark Johnson of The Chronicles of Narnia fame is said to be producing via his production company, Gran Via.

Writes the Hollywood Reporter:

“The story is set in 2033, after a nuclear holocaust devastates Moscow and survivors head under ground. The focus is on a young survivor who is forced to go on a journey that will see him deal with mutants, soldiers of a Fourth Reich and political factions of various metro stations in order to reach above ground.”

Metro 2033 was first released in online form in Russia back in 2002, and its popularity led to it becoming a full-on novel in 2005. The Metro 2033 video game was released in 2010 on PC and Xbox 360 to mostly positive reception–enough to warrant a sequel, Metro: Last Light.

The sequel was originally expected to release sometime around the latter half of 2012, but developer 4A Games announced earlier on in the year that Metro: Last Light had been pushed back until Q1 2013. The sequel will release on PC, PlayStation 3, Wii U and Xbox 360.
