‘Pokémon GO’ Player Finds Dead Body Near New Hampshire Holocaust Memorial

A man playing the latest game craze Pokémon GO stumbled upon a dead body on Thursday while at the Nashua, New Hampshire, Holocaust Memorial.

CBS Boston reports that Domenick Thambash is yet another gamer who’s found that exploring areas while playing Pokémon GO can bring about unexpected, and even traumatizing, experiences. While playing the game close to the Holocaust Memorial off of Main Street, Thambash stumbled upon a dead body floating in water. He was playing in an obscure area, close to the Salmon Brook near Rotary Common Park.

The goal of Pokémon GO is to have the game’s characters appear randomly on the player’s cellphone screen, which is accomplished when gamers travel to different areas. Players can collect virtual items when they travel to areas such as brooks, lakes, museums, monuments, and more.

Thambash immediately called 911, and according to Lt. Robert Gigg of the Nashua police, the body was hidden in the water behind brushes, limbs, and trees, which keep the brook isolated.

“I don’t know much about the Pokemon game, but apparently he was looking in obscure places for the game. The game gets them outside and walking around in a lot of places people wouldn’t normally be going. It’s not surprising the things people are finding because the game brings people out.”

The named of the deceased is still undisclosed, pending notification to the family.

This marks the second time someone playing the new game discovered a dead body. Earlier this, a teen girl in Wyoming found a deceased male floating in the Wind River, close to Rivertown.

Meanwhile, Investigation Discovery’s CrimeFeed reports that playing Pokémon GO is leading to arrests and assaults. In Portland, Oregon, 21-year-old Michael Baker ran into another Pokémon player, or so he thought, until he was stabbed in the shoulder. The suspect reportedly approached Baker on Wednesday at 1 a.m. in Forest Grove and asked him if he was up for a Pokémon battle. When Baker accepted, the suspected allegedly stabbed Baker, and ran off.

Baker continued to play the game after being stabbed, even refusing treatment at first so he could catch the Pokémon “villains.”

“I saw him go by and asked if he was playing Pokémon Go. He was like ‘what?’ I guess he wanted to battle because he came up at me with a knife. Right after I was stabbed, I continued my mission to Plaid Pantry for my mission for chips and beer. I basically risked my life.”

Baker eventually sought medical treatment, and received eight stitches in his shoulder. No arrests have been made yet.

In Auburn, Alabama, four suspects were arrested on Wednesday and charged with first-degree robbery and third-degree assault after they allegedly robbed a man playing Pokémon GO while standing outside a vacant building. The suspects held the man at gunpoint and reportedly took his belongings before fleeing in a car. The names of the suspects have yet to be released.

In Toledo, Ohio, two men are accused of illegally jumping over a fence at the Toledo Zoo while chasing virtual Pokémon GO characters. Robin Bartholomy, 25, and Adrian Crawford, 26, were charged with criminal trespassing after a security guard notified police that the pair were close to the tiger exhibit. Although both suspects pleaded not guilty, they’ve been permanently banned from the zoo.

Pokémon GO is a free application that anyone with a smartphone can obtain. Although it can be entertaining and promotes physical fitness, it’s important to ensure that children, and even adults who play, understand the safety risks and privacy concerns. The makers of Pokémon GO warn that players should never walk into unsafe and/or unknown areas.
