‘Stranger Things’ Looks Poised For Quick Second Season Renewal

Now that Stranger Things has officially launched on Netflix, the real question surrounding the original series is how long it will be until it gets a second season. Obviously, it’s way too early to know what kinds of viewership numbers the show has gotten, but the reviews have been overwhelmingly positive among critics.

Stranger Things launched with a fair amount of hoopla thanks in large part to the return from the depths of Winona Ryder. Ryder plays the mother of a child that goes missing in a small town with a rather big secret. Netflix has been putting more and more emphasis behind its original programming, and this project certainly seems like one the website will put some weight behind.

As Fansided reported, the first season of Stranger Things is made up of eight, one-hour episodes, and that alone has some fans wanting more right away. Written by the Duffer Brothers, the series stars Daniel Harbour and Matthew Modine alongside Ryder.

Stranger Things has some different themes running through the show, which has also helped hook viewers. In addition to Ryder’s son disappearing without a trace, trailers have shown another young girl showing up seemingly out of nowhere. This girl appears to possess some rather interesting abilities, including rather powerful telekinesis abilities.

The boy’s disappearance appears to be tied to the girl’s appearance, and some vast government conspiracy going on inside the town. What makes Stranger Things such an interesting watch to many viewers is trying to figure out not just what the conspiracy is, but who exactly knows about it.

Stranger Things also has a feel about it that has made many critics harken back to E.T. or Goonies. This is because the Netflix original series has put the kids in the town front and center. From the trailers, it’s obvious one group of kids will play a large role in unraveling the mystery in their town.

Stranger Things certainly isn’t an homage to classic thrillers from the 1980s by accident. It’s apparent the show went out of its way to remind people of that time. The National reports these homages go all the way down to the style of hair Ryder wore. The actress says the style is modeled after Meryl Streep’s hair in Silkwood. The hair isn’t the only thing Ryder’s character borrowed from past films.

“I took a lot from performances like Ellen Burstyn in ‘Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore’ (1974) and Marsha Mason in ‘Max Dugan Returns’ (1983) and ‘Audrey Rose’ (1977).”

Ryder told The National about her character in Stranger Things. When talking about the casting of Ryder, it seems like a genius move. This is the actress who came up in the 1980s and early 1990s. That’s when her career was at its strongest.

Winona Ryder understands what it takes to give a convincing performance from the genre Stranger Things is aiming to emulate. Winona Ryder is someone who has been said to be giving a winning performance, but others, including Modine, are making critics love the show as well. It seems like it should just be a matter of time before we hear the show got its second season.

Of course, with a show like this, there’s always the question of just how many stories can the program endure. Is the mystery going to become tedious if there is a second season? Can Stranger Things stay fresh?

This isn’t a program that will likely have a very long run. It shouldn’t be too long before we find out whether we’ll get at least a second season of Stranger Things. Netflix generally announces whether they have renewed a show a week or two after it debuts.
