Takeya Fluellen: Mom Of 11 Held Kids In Home Filled With Feces, Rotting Meat — Boy Says ‘I’m Moving On’

Takeya Fluellen is a 34-year-old mom of 11 kids, who, on Tuesday, told a judge in Pennsylvania that it was her love for her children and fear of losing them that drove her to keep them in her home, even though she was completely unable to maintain the living quarters in anything close to resembling a livable condition, according to a report in The Philadelphia Inquirer.

In fact, when police were called to their Steelton home, outside of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, they found a horrifying nightmare of a place overrun with rotting raw meat, maggots, and even piles of human feces in a bathtub.

Authorities discovered the repulsive conditions in July of last year in the row house home where Takeya Fluellen lived with her husband, Tyree Fluellen, father of five of the mom’s 11 kids, who range in age from two years old to 14. After an investigation, Steelton police were set to arrest Takeya Fluellen in early January this year, according to a WHTM TV report.

But instead of turning herself in as she had agreed, the mom of 11 went on the lam. United States Marshalls caught up with her the next day in Philadelphia and took her into custody.

The following WHTM video news report contains further details on Takeya Fluellen’s attempt to flee from the law on numerous charges of child endangerment.

The police became involved after neighbors complained of offensive odors coming from the Fluellen home, as well as complaints from concerned residents of the area that the 11 kids were often left without supervision.

When investigators finally got inside the home, what they found turned their stomachs. But what they did not yet find were the 11 kids, who had been taken away from the home by their mom and dad.

Checking out the conditions of the home, police found dirty diapers and broken toilets. In a bathroom, a bathtub had apparently been used as a makeshift toilet and was filled with human feces.

The investigators also found children’s toys and stuffed animals smeared and encrusted with fecal matter, as well as rotting meat left exposed on kitchen counters and crawling with maggots.

But the home had no beds or even furniture, despite the fact that 11 kids and their two parents lived there.

The following video report, also from WHTM, contains more information on the police findings.

According to the lawyer for the 29-year-old dad, Tyree Fluellen, the family was completely impoverished, and Tyree was a victim of his own horrifying upbringing with an alcoholic mother and a stepfather who murdered his baby sister by stomping on her neck. Tyree Fluellen, only a child himself at the time, witnessed the brutal baby-killing, attorney Wendy Grella said.

“I want what’s best for my kids,” Tyree Fluellen told Judge Deborah E. Curcillo on Tuesday. “I always tried to do the best I can.”

Takeya Fluellen also pleaded with the judge, saying that she never wanted to damage her children.

“I want you to know I love my children,” she said in court. “I want you to know I was not trying to harm them. It was the selfishness of not wanting to lose them.”

Six of the children were found to suffer from Shigella, a bacterial disease caused by consuming feces, even in minuscule amounts.

In the end, the judge was unsympathetic to the Fluellen family’s plight, and at least one of the children sent a letter to the court pleading to remain with his foster family and not be subjected once again to live with his mother, who was unable to care for him.

“She did some things wrong because she has to go to jail,” the fifth-grade boy wrote. “I’m just moving on because they are leaving soon.”

The boy also told the judge that he and his siblings wanted “to stay here” with their foster families who, he said, treated them well.

Takeya and Tyree Fluellen were each sentenced to up to two years in a state penitentiary, plus eight months of probation, on the child endangerment charges. The mom was also hit with a two-year probationary sentence on a welfare fraud charge.
