Winona Ryder Talks Marriage, Aging Gracefully, And Her Return To Hollywood

Winona Ryder has dated her share of heartthrobs over the years, including Johnny Depp in 1990 and Matt Damon in 1998. Although the 44-year-old almost went the distance with Depp, they called it off, and now Ryder is opening up about why she has never tied the knot to any of her long-term beaus.

The beauty is known for being ultra private and not usually willing to open up in candid interviews. However in Net-a-Porter’s The Edit, Winona shares why she’s never taken a walk down the aisle. Entertainment Tonight shares the star’s words on the subject.

“I’m a serial monogamist. I was single for a while and dating and… I just didn’t know how to do it! I’ve always been like that: when I was 15, there was a guy I liked, and we made out, and I thought that meant he was my boyfriend. My mom had to explain it to me.”

Ryder went on to explain the reason behind shying away from going past the boyfriend stage.

“But marriage? I don’t know. I’d rather never have been married than been divorced a few times. Not that there’s anything wrong with divorce, but I don’t think I could do it if that was a possibility. When your parents are madly in love for 45 years, your standards are really high. But I’ve been happily with someone for quite a while now.”

The beauty is currently in a relationship with Scott Makinlay Hahn, and the two have reportedly been an item for five years now. Although Winona had enjoyed her break from entertainment, likely enjoying her life with Hahn, who is a notable fashion designer, she shares that she is happy to return to the business on Netflix, in the drama Stranger Things. Ryder explains why she feels her hiatus from Hollywood was so needed.

“I was working a lot [in the ’90s] and I needed to slow down. It’s so important to have a life outside the industry, to not look to it to validate you as a human being… I’d been listening to the people I was working with — ‘You should be doing this, you have to keep working or people will forget you and you won’t be relevant…’ — but my heart wasn’t in it.”

The Beetlejuice star refers to her time away from the spotlight as “an awakening” and notes that she will only take on roles if they are truly something she feels a connection to and passionate about being a part of. Additionally, Winona shared her views on aging gracefully and not buying into all the modern day procedures people feel they need to invest in to stay looking youthful.

“I love getting older. I think it has to do with always being the kid on set. It’s interesting because, these days, [cosmetic surgery] is treated almost like hygiene. I’ve had people say to me, ‘Oh, you should, you know…’ and they point to my forehead. ‘Get that seen to!’ But I’m like, ‘No! I’ve been waiting so long for that to happen!'”

The star goes on to relay her understanding about what actresses feel based on youthfulness, and that without it, they simply just don’t get hired for the leading lady roles. Yet Ryder is a firm believer that playing the older woman or the mother can be just as exciting as being the young leading lady, and that it’s just about embracing a new phase.

When it comes to social media, which became overly popular since Winona went on her hiatus, she admits although it’s beneficial, in ways, it can also be a bit “dangerous.” Ryder prefers to remain private and not make her personal life known through posts on Instagram and Facebook.

The star, who was quite simply the face of the 90’s, seems to be back, and ready to wow her audiences once more.
