Nintendo’s NES Classic Edition Release Announcement Triggers Bouts Of Nostalgia For Retro Gamers

Nostalgia is the name of the game for Generation Xers and early Gen Yers, and Nintendo, the company that can arguably be considered the godfathers of modern gaming, have decided to cash in it. In a Facebook post this morning, Nintendo announced that this Christmas shopping season, they are releasing the NES Classic Edition, a miniature version of everyone’s favorite retro game console.

The NES Classic Edition is an almost exact replica of the original Nintendo Entertainment System that was released in the U.S. in 1985, right down to the grey finish, power and restart buttons, and controller ports. There’ll be no need to blow into cartridges to get them to work on the NES Classic Edition, however — the console comes preloaded with 30 of Nintendo’s most popular games. The games will still feature the quintessential 8-bit graphics that we all fell in love with, but some updates had to be made in order for the console to work with high definition televisions. To accomodate modern technology, the console comes complete with an HDMI port and an HDMI cable to hook up directly to any TV, reports Fortune.

Nintendo’s NES Classic Edition also comes with a replica controller, so all of your senses can be transported back in time to a point when life, and gaming, was so much simpler. What’s more, the controller can also be connected to a Wii remote so you can play any game in Nintendo’s treasure trove of classics on their Virtual Console with both the Wii and the Wii U.

According to BusinessWire, Nintendo of American COO Reggie Fils-Aime released a statement today in which he said the company hoped the release of the mini NES will allow gamers to “rediscover why they fell in love with Nintendo in the first place.”

“We wanted to give fans of all ages the opportunity to revisit Nintendo’s original system and rediscover why they fell in love with Nintendo in the first place. The Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition is ideal for anyone who remembers playing the NES, or who wants to pass on those nostalgic memories to the next generation of gamers.”

Another change made to the NES Classic Edition is one that will likely make retro gamers incredibly happy. Remember how frustrating it was having to start a game all over every time you turned your console off or lost a life? Well, fear not, as Nintendo has fixed that little problem. Each game will now feature multiple suspend points “so you can start where you left off at a later time, no passwords needed,” Fils-Aime said.

Although it is still unclear whether or not more games will be made available for the NES Classic Edition at a later time, the 30 preloaded games are sure to make all fans of the original Nintendo happy, nostalgic, and begging for more.

The 30 games packaged with the console include Balloon Fight, Bubble Bobble, Castlevania, Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Double Dragon II: The Revenge, Dr. Mario, Excitebike, Final Fantasy, Galaga, Ghosts’N Goblins, Gradius, Ice Climber, Kid Icarus, Kirby’s Adventure, Mario Bros., Mega Man 2, Metroid, Ninja Gaiden, Pac-Man, Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream, StarTropics, Super C, Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, Tecmo Bowl, The Legend of Zelda, and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link.

Nintendo’s NES Classic Edition will be available in stores in the U.S. and online on November 11 — just in time for Christmas — and will set you back a mere $59.99 USD. Although the console comes with a single controller, extra NES Classic Edition controllers can be purchased for $10 each.
