’20 Years Of Spice’ Explores The Rise Of The Spice Girls — With Help From The Girls Themselves

For a time in the late 90’s, the Spice Girls ruled just about everything there was to rule in the media world, which is pretty impressive considering they managed to accomplish that takeover off the strength of just two albums (they released three altogether, not including their 2007 Greatest Hits compilation).

Nonetheless, for all of the work the “Girl Power!” collective managed to not just take on but ultimately conquer, there has never been much a full visual record of their immense success, both early and ongoing, for past fans to peruse through and old critics, who still sell the Spice Girls far too short nearly two decades after their rise to fame, to be lightly reminded of.

Luckily, however, that’s now changed, thanks to an eternal Spice Girls super fan by the name of Alex Lodge, who put together an incredibly impressive documentary, 20 Years of Spice, to celebrate the accomplishments and achievements of the “Viva Forever” vocalists, and to also pay tribute to the upcoming 20th anniversary of the release of the group’s first No. 1 hit, “Wannabe,” on July 7, 1996.

Composed in a style much like that of 2003’s Tupac: Resurrection, 20 Years of Spice uses clips from interviews, performances, concerts, and previous documentaries featuring the Spice Girls that, by connection, allows the famed “Spice Force Five,” Melanie Brown (Scary Spice), Geri Horner (then Geri Halliwell, Ginger Spice), Melanie Chisholm (Sporty Spice, Victoria Beckham (then Victoria Addams, Posh Spice), and Emma Bunton (Baby Spice), to each take the wheel in sharing their unique and shared experiences as being one of the biggest girl groups to ever exist.

In smart fashion, Lodge doesn’t spend too much time in 20 Years of Spice detailing the early days of the Spice Girls that most are already familiar with — and can be revisited on two tour DVDs from 1997 and 1998 that Amazon still sells to this day, as well as a video transfer of the music sensation’s One Hour of Girl Power!, Vol. 1 docu-video released in 1997 (which have all, for the record, been long copied over to YouTube) — and instead, chooses to give more attention to the time that came after the Spice Girls “heyday” that even the most dedicated “Spice Boy” or “Spice Girl” may not actually be aware of.

A project of love, admiration and unbound, undying dedication to the Spice Girls, 20 Years of Spice proves that the love, support and “good times” that fans have felt for the “Girl Power!” collective for more than two decades now is something that, like the Girls’ friendship, may never meet an end.
