New York Mets News: Yoenis Cespedes, Noah Syndergaard Leave Friday’s Game With Injuries

The New York Mets are hobbling to the All-Star break as a pair of 2016 All-Stars, Noah Syndergaard and Yoenis Cespedes, left Friday night’s game against the Nationals due to injury.

Cespedes left last night’s game with a strained right quadriceps. The slugging outfielder attributed the injury to him chasing down Daniel Murphy’s RBI double to left-center field in the third inning. Former Gold Glove winner Juan Lagares replaced Cespedes in center field.

“Hopefully it doesn’t translate into me going on the 15-day DL,” Cespedes said to reporters, including ESPN New York’s Adam Rubin, through an interpreter. Cespedes noted that he suffered a similar injury with the Detroit Tigers in Spring Training last year and missed just four or five days.

While the Mets could place Cespedes on the disabled list and recall another position player — possibly Michael Conforto, whom the team recently demoted after he struggled for over a month — manager Terry Collins said the team will likely play short-handed for the two remaining games before the break.

As for Syndergaard, the hard-throwing right-hander was taken out in the fifth inning for rookie Seth Lugo after a pair of fastballs registered at just 93 and 91 mph. Per FanGraphs, Syndergaard’s average fastball velocity this season is 98.1 mph, so those pitches alarmed manager Terry Collins.

The 23-year-old is currently dealing with a bone spur in his throwing arm. However, after the game, Syndergaard said he simply experienced arm fatigue.

“I think it’s just that time of the year — my first full season in the big leagues,” Syndergaard said. “I’ve thrown a lot of pitches. I’ve thrown a lot of innings so far. I just think it’s a little bit of fatigue. There’s no pain. There’s no discomfort in my elbow regarding the spur. I felt like I could still go out there and pitch through that. It really boils down to a little shoulder fatigue.”

Collins noted that the injuries will prevent Cespedes and Syndergaard from playing in Tuesday’s All-Star game in San Diego, California.

It has been a rough week injury-wise for the Mets. After a rough outing on Monday, presumptive ace Matt Harvey landed on the DL with a shoulder issue. Following a visit with a doctor in St. Louis, Missouri, Harvey was diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome and elected for season-ending surgery. Also, much like Syndergaard, Steven Matz is currently dealing with a bone spur in his pitching arm and is attempting to hold off on surgery until after the season.

Also, much like Syndergaard, Steven Matz is currently dealing with a bone spur in his pitching arm and is attempting to hold off on surgery until after the season. Prized right-hander Zack Wheeler has dealt with a few setbacks in his comeback from Tommy John surgery and will not rejoin the team until late-August at the earliest.

On the position player front, the Mets are currently without David Wright (neck surgery) and Lucas Duda (back). The Mets have relied on Wilmer Flores, Jose Reyes, and James Loney to fill in at the corners as the two stalwarts recover. Wright is not expected back this year.

“I guess it’s part of the game,” Collins said of the Mets’ injuries. “I’ve never had it in such mass before to where every day it’s hard to walk into this [interview] room because the conversation is about who got hurt tonight. As you guys know, I’m a little tired of talking about it. It’s my job to talk about it. But I’m running out of things to say. And we’re running out of bodies.”
