Three Companies Settle FTC Charges That Bamboo Clothing Not Bamboo

Washington, D.C. (AHN) – Three companies have reached settlements with the Federal Trade Commission over charges that clothing sold as being manufactured of eco-friendly bamboo was actually made of rayon.
In a statement released Tuesday, the FTC said clothing sold under manufacturers Jonano, Mad Mod and Pure Bamboo had been marketed as made from bamboo fiber when it was actually made of rayon.
Rayon is created from cellulose in plants and trees that is processed with a chemical that releases pollutants into the air. If bamboo is used, the process eliminates the anti-microbial properties of the plant.
The manufacturers had also claimed that the textiles were made using an environmentally friendly process, were biodegradable and retained the natural antimicrobial properties of the bamboo. The FTC said all those claims were false.
The clothing was sold under names such as “ecoKashmere,” “Pure Bamboo,” “Bamboo Comfort” and “BambooBaby.”
In the settlement, the three companies agreed to properly label and advertise their products.
The FTC filed a similar charge against a fourth company, Bamboosa, on Aug. 7.
