Roberson’s injury, which was later diagnosed as a broken left leg, came in the second quarter of the game as the 19-year-old scrambled to score on a 3rd-and-goal play.

As he ran toward the end zone, Roberson stretched for the goal line and several players came down on Roberson’s left side, pinning his leg underneath him.

Trainers immobilized the leg on the field, then hoisted him onto a stretcher and he was driven off of the field in an ambulance.

According to ESPN, IU coach Kevin Wilson said that Roberson will take an injury redshirt, giving him three more years of eligibility starting in 2013.

“He has high goals, high standards and he’s a special kid, and we will have him for three more years,” coach Wilson told listeners on his weekly radio show Monday.

Wilson added that doctors inserted a titanium rod into Roberson’s leg Sunday and that it would likely take the athlete five to six months to make a full recovery.

Prior to the injury, Roberson was 33 of 50 for 368 yards with two TDs and one interception and had an efficiency rating of 137.02. He also had 12 carries for 133 yards and three touchdowns, including scoring runs of 50 and 39 yards against UMass.

In Roberson’s absence the Hoosiers will be forced to turn to sophomore juco transfer Cameron Coffman, who completed 16 of 22 passes for 159 yards and one touchdown in his backup role.

True freshman Nate Sudfeld, who originally committed to Arizona, will now take over as the No.2 quarterback.
