The home of Junior Seau, the deceased NFL linebacker who shot and killed himself in May, has been sold for just under $2 million.

The late football star’s beachfront Oceanside home, a two-story house at 604 S. The Strand, went on the market in July with a price tag of $2,295,000. It sold on August 31 for $1,975,000, according to Paula Skinner at ERA Ranch & Sea Realty, the agency that listed the property. The home had been on the market for all of 39 days.

The sale price is a considerable reduction on the $3.2 million Seau paid for the property in 2005, but Skinner says this is normal for homes within that price bracket. Writing in an email to the North County Times, Skinner explained:

“Remember that the home was purchased at the height of the market and sold during a poor economy where not many homes listed over $1 million on the Oceanside waterfront are selling right now.”

Michael Walter, a former neighbor of Junior Seau who is now attempting to raise $250,000 to build a monument in the NFL star’s honor, told the North County Times:

“It’s kind of sad, but it’s probably good for the community to move on.”

Needless to say, the home has a sad history: Seau, a standout player for the San Diego Chargers, shot himself in one of the guest bedrooms in the house on May 2.

Fans laid flowers, handwritten notes, and various trinkets in the driveway outside the property for several weeks after Junior Seau had passed away.
