Microsoft Surface Pro 5 May Not Be Released Until After New MacBook Pro And MacBook Air

To the disappointment of those wanting to purchase a Surface Pro 5 soon, strong rumors in the tech industry have suggested that Microsoft may not release the device until 2017. This would be long after Apple releases their updated MacBook Pro and MacBook Air notebooks. Vine Report has the news.

“The tech community has already started accepting the fact that the Microsoft Surface Pro 5 will not be released within the year. The reason for the delayed release date may actually be good for the consumers.”

The article adds that the Surface Pro 5 is likely being delayed so it can be equipped with a more productive operating system — Windows 10 Redstone 2, which will be released during the Spring of 2017.

According to Trusted Reviews, the Surface Pro 5 may have a 4K screen.

“A new report claims that the Microsoft Surface Pro 5 will feature a 4K Ultra HD display, which would be a first for the series. By contrast, the Surface Pro 4 has a maximum 2,736 x 1,824 pixel resolution.”

The article adds that the standard version of the Pro 5 may not have the 4K panel, but Microsoft might offer the display as a paid-for upgrade — this is what companies such as HP and Lenovo have been doing. This might not be a big deal to many consumers as the current 2,736 x 1,824 display is considered stunning. However, Trusted Reviews reveals that there will be a major upgrade on the processor for the Surface Pro 5.

“It’s also claimed that the Surface Pro 5 will feature Intel’s new 7th-generation Kaby Lake processors. The Kaby Lake processors aren’t out yet, but will arrive as a 14nm successor to Intel’s current-gen Skylake (also 14nm) microarchitecture. The Kaby Lake CPUs are expected to be more efficient, which could mean a better battery life for the end user,” claims columnist Sean Keach.

Microsoft’s Surface Pro line has become quite a hit, despite a rocky start in February of 2013. CNET was impressed with the device, but thought the poor battery life definitely took away from its appeal.

“I think I’m holding out for the inevitable Surface Pro 2 — the one that will undoubtedly offer better battery life and a host of other upgrades. This version makes strides, but it’s not the perfect laptop-killer yet,” said reviewer Scott Stein.

The Surface Pro 2 had improved battery life, but it wasn’t until the Surface Pro 3 when Microsoft could properly claim they had a hit laptop/tablet hybrid. Not only did the device receive excellent reviews, but it set the mode for the future of mobile computing. It also brought Microsoft back to relevance.

“Has Microsoft at last crafted a tablet that can reasonably, without considerable compromise, replace your laptop? Short of going back to the drawing board on the battery, this looks as close as it’s going to get.”

The review especially compliments the larger sharp screen, the much-improved Type Cover, and the improved Surface Pen. However, they also noted that the battery life still isn’t that great. In fact, the battery life has been the biggest complaint with the Surface Pro 4, especially the Intel Core i7 version. Let’s hope Microsoft can fix this when they finally release the Surface Pro 5.
