Jon Snow’s ‘Game Of Thrones’ Season Finale Twist Explained, And How It Will Affect Season 7

Following years of speculation, Game of Thrones finally revealed Jon Snow’s (Kit Harrington) true parentage. How will this impact Season 7?

The Season 6 finale of Game of Thrones dropped a huge revelation that Jon is, in fact, the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. According to Us Magazine, this vindicated fans who had long theorized that R + L equals J.

Not only is this a big deal for Jon, but it will have a lasting impact on the future of the series.

According to the Independent, the finale revealed everything that happened in the mysterious Tower of Joy plot.

The scene in question showed a young Ned Stark coming to his sister’s rescue, who was being held in the tower. Ned found Lyanna almost dead after giving birth to a son. She then made Ned promise to keep the child safe and hidden from Robert.

It was then revealed that the child grew up to be Jon Snow, whom Ned claimed was his bastard son.

Ned went on to raise Jon in Winterfell along with his other children.

Jon’s birth has been a mystery ever since George R.R. Martin published the first book in A Son of Ice and Fire series. Now that we know for sure Jon is a Targaryen, a look back reveals hidden clues along the way.

In Season 1 of Game of Thrones, Jon’s relationship with Ned seemed circumspect. Bastard or not, it was strange that Ned agreed to send Jon to The Wall after raising him in Winterfell. After all, life guarding The Wall seemed like a waste of talent.

Given how Jon is really a Targaryen, and Robert Baratheon’s willingness to kill any Targaryen heir, it makes sense that Ned would want to keep Jon safe at the wall. It also kept Jon far away from King Robert and off his Targaryen radar.

Ned’s plan worked, and Jon managed to escape Robert’s wrath.

What does this mean moving forward?

Jon is Rhaegar’s only legitimate child left. This makes him the first in line to the throne and gives him the best claim to become king.

Jon is also the Azor Ahai, or the prince that was prophesied to lead the war against the White Walkers.

Coupled together, Jon’s future in the series is very promising. Of course, he still has Daenerys Targaryen to deal with.

Indeed, Daenerys has just as much a claim to the Iron Throne as Jon. According to Vanity Fair, Jon and Daenerys will either fight it out when she returns to Westeros next season or they will unite.

At this point, it’s anyone’s guess what will happen between Jon and his aunt Daenerys. However, the show appears to be setting things up for a potential marriage.

According to iDigital Times, the finale featured Daenerys ending her relationship with Daario Naharis. Now that Daenerys is a single woman again, she has her eyes set on marrying someone in Westeros.

Daenerys’ main goal is to retake the Iron Throne, but she also wants to build a better world. Considering their personalities and ambitions, it seems more likely that Jon and Daenerys will unite their forces against the White Walkers instead of fighting each other.

Furthermore, Daenerys doesn’t have a lot of options when it comes to marrying a high lord. The only lords remaining are Robin Arryn, Euron Greyjoy, and Jon Snow.

Robin, the Lord of the Vale, is far too young for Daenerys, while Euron will likely come into direct conflict with her. That leaves Jon as Daenerys best candidate for a husband.

Whatever happens, Daenerys and Jon will need to work things out in the coming season before the White Walkers make their way south.

The new season of Game of Thrones is expected to premiere next spring.
