Australia 2016 Election Live Results: Find All Up-To-Date Voting Totals And Live Streaming Coverage For Prime Minister Race And Other Federal Races

Those in Australia who want to follow live election results will have plenty of options to find up-to-date voting totals for all federal and local races.

Voters will take to the polls on Saturday in the country’s federal election, with the potential for a new Prime Minister, as well as races in the Congress and Senate. As the BBC noted, the conservative coalition government is expected to remain in power and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is expected to benefit from the U.K.’s decision to leave the European Union and win over the Labor Party’s Bill Shorten, but polls are tight and anything can happen.

There are close to 7,000 polling places across the nation, all open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. There were another 600 early voting centers that operated in the weeks leading up to voting day, the Sydney Morning Herald noted.

Though the greater result of the election is likely the re-election of Turnbull, those who follow the live results of the Australia 2016 election could see a number of surprises. There are many vulnerable seats for the conservatives in power, and some polls have indicated that there is a chance of a hung parliament.

As voting day arrived, both Prime Minister candidates took their message directly to the people, meeting with voters and making the most of their last opportunity to get their word across.

Shorten was characterizing Saturday’s vote as a “referendum on Medicare,” the Sydney Morning Herald noted.

“Australian voters understand that you can have Malcolm Turnbull or you can have Medicare, but you can’t have both,” Shorten said. “People are aware that a vote for me and for Labor [means] we can protect Medicare as we know it now.”

Shorten went on to compare Turnbull to a “mugger who’s taken your wallet promising not to rob you again” in regard to Medicare.

But Shorten could have a lot working against him. BBC News analyst Jon Donnison noted that despite Australia’s reputation as the world’s biggest gamblers, voters are “feeling a little risk averse” amid the potential global turmoil from the U.K.’s decision to bolt from the European Union.

The stability promised by Turnbull could top the social equality issues being pushed by Shorten, Donnison noted.

“As the result of the UK’s referendum became clear, Mr Turnbull assured voters that he could deliver ‘economic certainty.’

“The former lawyer and investment banker vowed to deliver tax cuts for workers and small businesses.

“In contrast, Mr Shorten has promised to make his first priority legalising same-sex marriage.”

Though many experts believe Turnbull will hold on, polls show a very close race with Shorten, one that could take well beyond Election Day to decide.

There will also be plenty of interest in the 2016 Australia election live results beyond the Prime Minister race. BBC News noted that an increasing number of voters have become turned off to the two major parties, leading to the rise of a number of smaller off-shoots and even micro parties that have a chance of making gains on Saturday.

The Greens are likely to add to the 10 Senate seats and one lower house seat they currently hold, and Senator Nick Xenophon’s pro-protectionism and anti-gambling party could end up being the tipping point in the event of a hung parliament, the report noted.

And as the voters take to the polls and candidates make their final pitch, millions of Australians are also settling in for another Election Day tradition — food. Many people went online to share pictures of their barbecue meats and their favorite Election Day recipes.
