The back to school box office lull has caused ticket sales to plummet as the horror flick Possession won the top spot this weekend with a mediocre $9.5 million domestic haul.

The biggest win on the weekend may have been 2016: Obama’s America, which broke the $26 million mark to become the second higher grossing documentary of all time. The highest grossing documentary title still belongs to the George W. Bush inspired Fahrenheit 9/11,which took in $119.2 million. Fahrenheit 9/11 was directed by famed liberal Michael Moore. The new Obama flick is fitting considering Michael Moore recently told his supporters to get use to saying “President Romney.”

According to the Hollywood Reporter, this weekend could be the worst in September since the terrorist attacks on New York City.

Taking the No. 2 spot was Lawless, which earned $6 million, just ahead of the Bradley Cooper and Zoe Saldana helmed movie The Words, which earned $5 million thanks to a large female audience that flocked to the film.

In its debut, the $20 million to $30 million flick In the Cold Light of Day misfired with $1.8 million during its weekend debut. Summit and co-financer Intrepid Pictures noted that losses for the flick would be negligible thanks to Spanish product rebates and foreign presales. The movie includes a strong cast which includes Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Echegui, and Bruce Willis

Should numbers hold up, this will be the first post-Labor day weekend to feature no movies that broke the $10 million mark.
