Johnny Depp Gives First Interview Since Amber Heard’s Domestic Abuse Allegations

Johnny Depp has given his first public interview since estranged wife Amber Heard filed for divorce last month.

The 53-year-old actor made a surprise appearance at Comedy Store in Los Angeles to perform with his band Hollywood Vampires on L.A.’s 95.5 KLOS Jonesy’s Jukebox on Monday, as previously reported by Entertainment Tonight. In the interview, Depp talked about how music became an integral part of his life even at a young age, as well as his band’s recent tour.

“I’ve [been a musician] since I was little – since I was 12 I’ve played. I started playing clubs when I was like 13 in Miami,” the Pirates of the Caribbean actor said.

Johnny Depp told the radio host that music was his first love and that he went into acting by accident — specifically to help him pay his rent.

“Somebody said, ‘Why don’t you go meet an agent. My agent is with Nick Cage,’ so she sent me on an audition for something and I got it,” Johnny continued. “I like the process of it… I don’t wanna be a product. I don’t watch the movies, so for me all I have is the experience.”

While Depp hasn’t directly mentioned his estranged wife Amber Heard in light of divorce proceedings and the domestic abuse allegations hurled against the actor, the Through the Looking Glass star did lament the public side of being famous.

In the meantime, the legal battle between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard has been postponed until August. The court granted Heard a restraining order after she filed a court order by the end of May — just a few days after she filed for divorce.

In court documents, Amber alleged that she suffered domestic abuse from Johnny Depp, even claiming that he once threw an iPhone at her face. In another complaint, Amber said that Johnny once injured his hand after he punched a wall during a fight in Australia. The injury was so serious that Depp had to fly back to the US to undergo surgery. The surgery reportedly postponed the filming of the Pirates of the Caribbean sequel, Dead Men Tell No Tales, for over a month, according to Toronto Sun.

In response to Amber Heard’s allegations, Depp’s lawyers defended the actor by claiming in court documents that the actress was “attempting to secure a premature financial resolution by alleging abuse.”

With Depp’s character being thrown into question following Heard’s allegations, the actor’s former girlfriend, Winona Ryder, has come to his defense, claiming that he had been a “good, loving and caring guy” in all the five years they’d been together back in the 90’s.

“I can only speak from my own experience, which was wildly different than what is being said. He was never, never that way towards me,” Ryder said of Depp to Time.

“Never abusive at all towards me. I only know him as a really good, loving, caring guy who is very, very protective of the people that he loves,” she continued.

Worried that her statement might be interpreted as an attempt to disprove Amber’s claims, Ryder pointed out that she was not calling anyone a liar.

“I wasn’t there. I don’t know what happened. I’m not calling anyone a liar. I’m just saying, it’s difficult and upsetting for me to wrap my head around it. Look, it was a long time ago, but we were together for four years, and it was a big relationship for me. Imagine if someone you dated when you were – I was 17 when I met him – was accused of that. It’s just shocking. I have never seen him be violent toward a person before.”
