Proving there is no god, G.I Joe breaks August box office record

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra broke box office records in the United States Friday earning $22.3 million, the highest ever opening for an August non-sequel movie.

The weekend isn’t over yet, with history suggesting that G.I. Joe will go even higher Saturday and Sunday. According to Variety, other recent big August movies The Bourne Ultimatum and Rush Hour 2” typically clear the $20 million mark on their first day before posting a weekend take of at least $60 million. G.I. Joe is set to beat both them.

G.I. Joe has been panned by critics, although Roger Ebert did note that it was a better movie that Transformers 2, although that in itself was far from a compliment.
