By now you’ve most likely heard that former President Bill Clinton’s speech nominating President Barrack Obama at the Democratic National Convention was well received by just about everyone on the left. But the speech had another, less likely fan — GOP nominee for president Mitt Romney.

Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts, is Obama’s Republican opponent, so his praising a speech that supported Obama and bashed his own policies might seem a bit strange. The Washington Post reports that in an an interview with NBC’s Meet The Press scheduled to air on Sunday, Romney said Clinton elevated the DNC.

He did stand out in contrast with the other speakers,” Romney said. “I think he really did elevate the Democrat convention in a lot of ways. And frankly, the contrast may not have been as — as attractive as Barack Obama might have preferred if he were choosing who’d go before him and who’d go after.”

Clinton’s speech last Wednesday was applauded for both his speaking ability and the detail with which he outlined the contrasts between Obama and Romney. The husband of Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, Bill Clinton has remained popular in the more than 10 years since he left the White House.

In fact, USA Today reported that Romney even speculated a bit concerning whether or not Clinton could win a third term — were such a thing legally possible. Clinton, 66, is only one year older than Romney.

“You know, if the Constitution weren’t in his way, perhaps. But I don’t know the answer to that,” Romney said.
