Christopher Hitchens, perhaps the most vocal and persuasive modern voice against religion, often was skeptical a deathbed conversion would occur in his strong absence of belief — and the venerated author’s wife Carol Blue says that indeed, Hitchens never wavered even as death loomed unexpectedly early after he became ill with pneumonia.

Christopher Hitchens’ last book, Mortality, was not even fully finished when he succumbed to the infection in the hospital last December — and Blue says he’d even emailed an editor promising to be out and writing in a few days.

But while Hitchens may not have expected death to come so soon, it seems his prediction of not developing a God habit came to pass. Blue says that even in the author and speaker’s final days, no spirit moved him — she explains to the Christian Post:

“There were many friends there (at the hospital) and he was the one kind of carrying the conversation, bringing up the various subjects,” she said. “God never came up, if anyone’s interested. It just was a non-subject.”

Blue adds:

“If he had had a ‘revelation’ he would’ve been the first to share it and he would’ve done it in a very interesting way, but as it happens, he didn’t.”
