America’s Unluckiest Woman? Melanie Martinez Loses Fifth House To Hurricane Isaac

People living along the Gulf Coast are well aware of the fact that hurricane season can be a dangerous time of year. Few, however, believe that their homes will be destroyed. And having your home destroyed five times? Well, that’s just about impossible.

That is unless you’re Melanie Martinez.

Martinez, a Louisiana native who has been dubbed “America’s unluckiest woman,” had her fifth home destroyed by a hurricane last week when Hurricane Isaac roared over New Orleans.

The Business Insider reports that Martinez and her family tried to evacuate Braithwaite, Louisiana, before the storm hit, but their truck broke down, forcing them to hunker down in the house’s attic.

Martinez said:

“We thought we were going to die in that house… The water was coming up so fast. My husband used a hammer to put a hole in the roof but it broke. We used our hands and feet to punch the hole.”

Martinez has lost homes to hurricanes before but this one hit particularly hard since the A&E reality show Hideous Houses had just chosen her home for a $20,000 makeover.

Martinez lost her first house to Hurricanes Betsy in 1965, then to Hurricane Juan in 1985, Hurricane George in 1998 and Hurricane Katrina in 2005. But despite her bad luck, Martinez insists that she isn’t leaving Louisiana.

Martinez said:

“I was born here… It’s home, home, home.”

Do you think it’s time for Melanie Martinez to pack it up and move somewhere away from hurricanes?
