California Meatpacker Recalls More Than 800,000 Pounds Of Beef

Washington, D.C. (AHN) – A Fresno, California-based meatpacker has recalled 825,769 pounds of ground beef linked to an outbreak of salmonella infection in Colorado, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Thursday.
The department’s Food Safety and Inspection Service identified the recalled products of Beef Packers Inc. as containing the production date June 5 through June 23, 2009 and the code EST. 31913.
But since the ground beef are likely to have been repacked in smaller sizes, the FSIS said consumers have to ask retailers if they are buying part of the recalled ground beef distributed in Arizona, California, Colorado and Utah.
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and the FSIS have found that cases of salmonellosis were linked to Beef Packers’ fresh ground beef products. Both agencies identified the drug-resistant strain Salmonella Newport as the cause of the outbreak.
Symptoms of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal pain and fever in the first eight to 72 hours. Infected people also suffer from chills, headache, nausea and vomiting for up to seven days.
