It’s official: Chucky is back and ready to play. The sixth film in the Chucky franchise, titled Curse of Chucky, has officially begun principal photography in Winnipeg, Manitoba in Canada today. The franchise is said to come “full circle” with the latest, and what’s assumed to be the last, Chucky installment.

This last film, which sees the doll serial killer return for a killing spree is a production from Universal Studios Home Entertainment and stars Fiona Dourif (True Blood), A Martinez (Longmire), and Brennan Elliott (The 4400). Dourif, the original voice of Chucky, returns again for this installment to voice everyone’s favorite little psychotic killer. For those who aren’t familiar, toyland’s Chucky is a doll possessed by the spirit of an evil serial killer, Charles Lee Ray, who is still out for revenge.

The plot is simple and goes along the lines of previous Chucky films. Nica is a woman who’s grieving over the death of her mother when her sister Barb arrives with her family to help Nica cope with the loss. As the sisters fight over how to settle the mother’s affairs, Barb’s daughter comforts herself over the loss with the help of a seemingly innocent doll: Chucky. However, things turn brutal as Chucky takes over to terrorize the household by committing a string of murders.

The new Chucky installment will be directed by Don Mancini, the Child’s Play creator and writer. David Kirschner (Hocus Pocus) will produce the screenplay from Mancini, and Tony Gardner will also return for the FX.

Back when the first installment debuted 20 years ago, there wasn’t so much emphasis on violence in the media. The films, if anything, were purely meant for laughs and gags. Do you think this generation of kids will have a different feeling towards the Chucky franchise?
