Watch England Vs. Slovakia 2016 UEFA Euro Live Stream: Rooney, Kane, Sterling Out As Hodgson Makes Risky England Changes

England face Slovakia in the third and final 2016 UEFA European Championship Group B match, a match that will stream live Monday and will determine England’s immediate future in the 2016 Euro tournament. But despite the importance of the Slovakia showdown, England Manager Roy Hodgson has reportedly elected to take a tremendous gamble with his starting XI selection.

According to reports in the British press over the weekend, Hodgson plans to leave out, most dramatically, team captain Wayne Rooney — and as many as five other star players, even though a loss for England could see them out of the competition altogether.

England appear probable to qualify for the knockout stage even if they lose, but in that case, would finish in third place in the group and be forced to face a world elite opponent in the Round of 16, meaning they could still face an early exit from the 2016 UEFA Euro — an exit that would likely cost Hodgson his job.

The manager’s contract is up after this year’s Euros, and English Football Association Chairman Greg Dyke has stated on the record that Hodgson must lead his team at least to the semifinals in order to receive a renewal offer.

According to the media reports, in addition to Rooney, Hodgson is also planning to bench striker Harry Kane as well as Raheem Sterling, Kyle Walker, Delle Alli and Danny Rose.

Daniel Sturridge and Jamie Vardy will likely take on the dual attacking role, after each scoring one of the two goals off the bench in the 2-1 England victory over Wales.

Hodgson, for his part, claims that his contract status has played no role in his decision-making process leading into the England vs. Slovakia showdown.

“My contract runs out after this tournament. Everyone knows that. On a regular basis the subject gets brought up: should I stay? Do I want to stay? What should the FA do?” Hodgson said on Sunday. “We’re only concentrating on winning the next game to see how far we can go, whether that’s the last 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals or final.”
