Larry Wachowski’s transformation into Lana Wachowski was a subject of media interest several months ago, and the Matrix co-director explained her reasons for the transformation in a recent interview.

Speaking on her sex change for the first time, the filmmaker revealed in a candid interview with New Yorker magazine that she was initially “terrified” to go through with the operation because she was afraid to lose her family. Lana lived as Larry until 2002 and only publicly confirmed her gender reassignment in July while promoting the new Tom Hanks film Cloud Atlas.

“For years, I couldn’t even say the words transgendered or transsexual. When I began to admit it to myself, I knew I would eventually have to tell my parents and my brother and my sisters. This fact would inject such terror into me that I would not sleep for days.”

Wachowski divorced wife Thea Bloom in 2002 and went on to marry a second wife. Her interview shows that she spent many sleepless nights over whether or not to tell her relatives about her desire to become a woman. When she finally admitted that she was seeking sex reassignment surgery, she experienced an outpouring of family support and now feels happy in her life.

“I chose to change my exterior to bring it closer into alignment with my interior …. My biggest fears were all about losing my family. Once they accepted me, everything else has been a piece of cake.”

The intensely private decision to become Lana Wachowski will remain mostly private.

“I know that many people are dying to know if I have a surgically constructed vagina or not, but I prefer to keep this information between my wife and me.”
