Jason Witten is willing to do just about anything to play during the NFL season opener between the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants tonight.

According to ESPN, the Cowboys’ tight end is “willing to sign a medical waiver that would not hold the Cowboys or team doctors liable in case he re-injured his lacerated spleen.” The Cowboys, however, are not willing to sign a similar waiver.

Witten is currently recovering from a lacerated spleen. The Cowboys player had a CT scan on Tuesday to determine how well he is healing. The Cowboys haven’t released too many details about Witten’s condition but they did list him as doubtful for tonight’s game. Currently, Witten is a game time decision.

According to the Washington Post, the Cowboys will probably keep Witten on the sideline tonight to make sure that he’s ready for next week and the rest of the season. Re-injuring his spleen could put Witten on the sidelines for the majority of the season. The Cowboys will definitely be short-handed without him tonight, but risking the season over one game is a little too risky.

If Witten does sit out tonight it will be the first game that he misses since his rookie year. John Phillips and rookie James Hanna would fill in at the tight end position if Witten stays on the sidelines.
