‘The LEGO Movie 2’ Gets Seriously Delayed As Warner Bros. Shuffles Around A Lot Of Dates

In 2014, The LEGO Movie took the box office by storm and delivered a huge hit that was surely going to bring about multiple sequels. As fans have waited for any news on the second one, not much has been known except that The LEGO Movie 2 would indeed be happening. While that is good news, there is some bad news from Warner Bros. and it’s that the sequel was just delayed by an extreme amount and Marvel/Disney may be to blame for it.

According to Collider, The LEGO Movie 2 is being pushed back from its release date of May 18, 2018, to Feb. 8, 2019, and that’s just extremely harsh.

Writers/directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller are still on board to script the film, so that hasn’t changed at all. Jared Stern, Rob Schrab, and Michelle Morgan are also still working on it as the directors so everyone is gung-ho on The LEGO Movie sequel, but Warner Bros. is just not in a position to get it in theaters at the time promised and there are possible big reasons for that.

The first part of Avengers: Infinity War is set to open in theaters on May 4, 2018, and anyone that can look at a calendar can see that’s just two weeks prior to the release of The LEGO Movie 2. Well, the now former release date for Warner Bros. follow-up to their 2014 hit.

Warner Bros. really doesn’t want to go head-to-head with the Marvel/Disney giant again, and this year’s box office proves that.

In March, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice opened up and was hot for a little while, but it had no lasting power whatsoever. When Captain America: Civil War was released in early May, the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) quit making any money almost entirely and it was time to close up shop for that film.

Opening in February of 2019 will give The LEGO Movie 2 a full three months before the second part of Avengers: Infinity War (working title) opens. That will be more than enough time for the film to have its hot streak and then likely exit theaters before Marvel moves in again.

The thing is, it’s not like Phil Lord and Christopher Miller don’t have enough to do anyway. The duo is writing the script for Disney and Marvel’s animated Spider-Man, film which is due out in 2018. They are also heading back to the director’s chairs for the Han Solo spinoff film, which is also a Disney property.

So, not only is Warner Bros. looking to keep from competing directly with Marvel and Disney, but they know they’re LEGO writers also have a lot of work to do for their main competitors.

Lord and Miller are sought-after writers and directors, so it is no surprise that Disney brought them in for multiple projects. While they are still working for Warner Bros., it has to make The Walt Disney Company smile a bit bigger knowing they are the likely reason that such a huge film has had to be delayed.

With the movement of The LEGO Movie 2, there are other films which have been shuffled around at Warner Bros. as well.

  • Live By Night with Ben Affleck is now opening on Jan. 13, 2017 instead of October 2017
  • Geostorm with Gerard Butler has been moved back to Oct. 20, 2017
  • Bastards with Ed Helms and Owen Wilson moved from November 2016 to Jan. 27, 2017

Warner Bros. hit the jackpot with The LEGO Movie back in 2014, and virtually no-one thought it would be just as successful as it was. It was a definite given that it would be given a sequel and it has, but now that film has been delayed almost an entire year. The LEGO Movie 2 will not open until 2019, and it very well could be due to Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War and any other number of Disney projects. It’s still going to be great, but this is a huge blow for the fans.
