Fresh off a late win against a dogged Czech Republic side, Spain will be looking to extend their unbeaten run in the Euros to 14 games when they take on Turkey later today. The Spanish team have not lost a game in the European championships since 2004 against Portugal, having won two Euros in the intervening years.

Talisman Andres Iniesta, who was also man of the match for Spain in the first game against the Czechs, reiterated that Turkey will present a different challenge to his side, according to Sky Sports.

“There is no point in having a good game and then following it with a terrible performance. We have to plan the game against Turkey with the same motivation and enthusiasm as we did against the Czechs.”

While Spanish teams are used to seeing their opposition teams sit deep and defend for major chunks of the game, Spain manager Vicente del Bosque reckons that Turkey, considering the players that they themselves possess, will be eager to demonstrate their own quality against the European champions.

“We also have to approach this game expecting Turkey to make it really difficult for us. They are a great team who play great football – they have great players and we have to prepare ourselves for the difficulties they will pose us.

“I don’t think they will be the kind of team to sit back and not take the initiative, they will be after possession, they have bold players, they have brave players. I know the Turkish style of play very well, I don’t think they’ll give in easily, they’ll give a good account of themselves in the face of whatever we throw at them. I’m sure they’ll try to make it very difficult for us.”

Spain have never faced Turkey in a major tournament so far, but La Roja have a scintillating record against them overall, having lost just one game in ten matches.

Spain have no major injury worries ahead of the game, and Manchester United keeper David de Gea is expected to start ahead of country legend Iker Casillas in goal.

Turkey

Having lost their first game narrowly against Croatia, Turkey will be desperate to get their first points on the board in Euro 2016 when they take on the European champions, despite the size of the challenge awaiting them later today.

Turkey manager Fatih Terim insisted that his side are hurting deeply after losing the first game, and promised Turkish supporters that they can expect a different match when his team takes on Spain, according to UEFA.com.

“You can’t just go and play Spain without trying to actually play. If you just try to defend and close the game down, they will eventually open it up. We will try to play our own game.

“In the first match we were more like a club side than a national team. It upset us all. There was no reaction after conceding and that isn’t good. We will look more like the Turkish team we really are against Spain. Rest assured, it will be different.”

Turkey will undoubtedly be banking on their star player, Arda Turan, to raise his game against a team that boasts of many of his Barcelona team-mates, including Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets. The latter was imperial in Spain’s first game against Czech Republic, and Terim will know that Turan will have to be his best if Turkey have to get anything out of this game.

Terim’s men will also feel boosted by the fact that they have performed progressively better in each of their appearances at the European stage. Having been knocked out of the group stages in Euro 1996, Turkey went on to reach the quarterfinals four years later, and reached the semi-finals during their last tournament appearance in 2008.

Like Spain, Turkey do not have any injuries to contend with either.
