iPhone 5: Apple Announces September 12 Event for Next-Generation iPhone Reveal

We may have already known about it thanks to a number of leaks, but Apple confirmed on Tuesday that it will be holding an event next week, September 12, where the company is expected to finally pull back the curtains on the long-awaited iPhone 5.

The event is scheduled to take place at 10:00 a.m. PST next Wednesday at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco, where Apple has made several of its new gear announcements in the past.

Apple didn’t actually say that the event is for the iPhone 5, of course, but it’s tough to believe that it could be anything else considering all of the rumors and leaks we’ve been seeing recently.

The promotional image for the event isn’t exactly subtle, either. As you can see for yourself above, the image very clearly displays the shadow of a “5”. Apple doesn’t have any other products nearing the 5th iteration mark, so we’re going to have to go with iPhone 5.

Rumors have been swirling recently that Apple’s iPhone 5 features a number of upgrades over its predecessors. For starters, the iPhone 5 screen is said to be sporting a larger 4-inch display from Sharp. Another recent video an all-new headphone design for the iPhone 5, the first headphone redesign in nearly six years.

In addition to the iPhone 5, Apple is also said to be working on a smaller version of its popular iPad, dubbed the “iPad Mini”. That device is expected to be announced at a later date, but before year’s end.
