‘The Conjuring 2’ Getting A New Spinoff Film [Video]

The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist has done so well at the box office that the studio has already greenlit a spinoff film about the nun in the paranormal horror movie.

This will not be the first time that The Conjuring franchise has made a spinoff of its major hit maker films from James Wan. The horror maestro has done such a good job crafting truly terrifying characters in The Conjuring movies that the demand for his creations has shot through the roof.

It now appears that The Conjuring franchise is turning itself into a truly enigmatic cinematic universe with a new spinoff film, tentatively titled The Nun. There has also been a report that The Conjuring 2 co-writer, David Leslie Johnson, has been hired to come back and write the spinoff film with James Wan and Peter Safran returning to produce the film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The same thing was done with The Conjuring, which spun off the Annabelle doll into a self-titled movie, which was a part of The Conjuring universe, but still was a completely separate film. Both of those movies were said to be based on true events, taken from the case files of Ed and Lorraine Warren.

Something that is unique to The Nun spinoff film is that it is truly from the mind of The Conjuring 2 director, James Wan. Originally, the first cut of The Conjuring 2 did not have the Nun in it at all. It only featured a horned demon. The film had wrapped up and was ready to be delivered to New Line Cinema, which fell in love with Wan’s sequel masterpiece.

But there came a moment where James Wan was just not truly satisfied with The Conjuring 2 and he tried brainstorming for that one major piece that was missing. That was when he came up with the concept of the nun and he took it to the New Line executives, just three months before The Conjuring 2 release date.

With most young directors, the notion to do reshoots on a project that is three months away from release and perfectly good with what they had would be preposterous. But with James Wan and his visionary eye, the executives green-lit his reshoots and the crew came back together on short notice and put the movie through a new set of touch ups, adding the demonic nun to the sequences.

For all intents and purposes, the nun in The Conjuring 2 is completely fictional and has no real relevance to the case files of Ed and Lorraine Warren. So that means that The Conjuring 2 spinoff film will not be the classic “true horror” film that the franchise has been developing. But, of course, it could use some true events from the Warren case files just to squeeze in the “true horror” moniker.

The Conjuring 2 has recently dominated the North American box-office, pulling in over $40 million domestic and over $90 million worldwide… in its first weekend.

As many have noted, this is a rare occurrence for an R-rated horror film, most of which usually end up at the bottom of the box-office barrel due to the nature of the films. They simply are not family-friendly and they do not sell as many tickets.

The strong box-office numbers for The Conjuring 2 indicate that the film franchise is quickly gaining a cult following and more people are taking chances at the theaters with a film that is classified as “true horror,” which seems to be the main draw.

There has been no word yet as to who will direct The Nun, nor when The Conjuring 2 spinoff will be released.
