Ask President Barack Obama the grade he gives himself on fixing the economy, and he’ll say “incomplete.” Republicans, then, attack the POTUS for admitting to what has become the cornerstone of Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign – that the economic policies set in motion by the president have failed utterly.

In an interview with KKTV yesterday, President Obama admitted that his work with the US economy isn’t yet complete, though quickly added that “the steps that we have taken in saving the auto industry, in making sure that college is more affordable, and investing in clean energy and science and technology and research,” will indeed pay off in the long run. The president gave himself similar ratings on the economy in 2010 and 2011, notes Buzzfeed, and Republicans took Obama’s grade on the economy as a lightning rod to fuel campaign rhetoric.

“Four years into a presidency and an incomplete?” said Paul Ryan on CBS this morning. “I think the incomplete speaks for itself, and that is why I think we are going to win this and get this country on the right track because we’re offering solutions.”

The RNC and Mitt Romney’s campaign also pounced on President Obama’s “incomplete,” reminding the public that in 2009, the POTUS said that if he couldn’t “have this [economic recovery] done in three years, then there’s going to be a one-term proposition.”

Over at HotAir, Ed Morrissey captured what has become the frustrated GOP sentiment on President Obama’s economy, writing, “Incomplete? Maybe Professor Obama doesn’t realize this, but report cards come out pretty soon. We’re not going to let him stay after school for extra credit at this point. Obama already flunked his midterms, so unless he’s got a better argument than a demand for an extension, he’s likely to get expelled for academic inadequacy.”
