The ‘Pregnant Man’ Thomas Beatie Wants Fourth Child

Thomas Beatie, a transgender man, created headlines all over the globe when he identified himself as a full-fledged man while pregnant with his first child in 2007. Now divorced from wife Nancy, Beatie hopes to have his fourth child with his new partner, girlfriend Amber Nicholas.

Beatie told the Sunday Mirror of his hopes to conceive his fourth child at 38. “Being pregnant is the most incredible experience, but we want Amber to do it this time around. I think it would be amazing to experience pregnancy as the father.” In 2007 Thomas Beatie decided to conceive after his wife Nancy, was infertile.

However, now that he’s with girlfriend Amber doesn’t mean a fourth birth for Beatie is completely off the table. According to Beatie he’s still open to the idea of going through with a fourth pregnancy, despite heavy controversy surrounding his pregnancies. “It is even possible we could both be pregnant at the same time. Amber suggested we both try to get pregnant and whoever gets there first goes through with it.” said Beatie.

Although Thomas Beatie reproductively speaking is still a woman, he’s gone on to receive the honor of being recognized as “The First Pregnant Man” via The Guinness Book of World Records. Knowing he would receive flack for his controversial nature, in 2008 Beatie wrote an article for The Advocate posing the question “is society ready for this pregnant husband?”

In the article he writes:

“How does it feel to be a pregnant man? Incredible. Despite the fact that my belly is growing with a new life inside me, I am stable and confident being the man that I am. In a technical sense I see myself as my own surrogate, though my gender identity as male is constant. To Nancy, I am her husband carrying our child—I am so lucky to have such a loving, supportive wife. I will be my daughter’s father, and Nancy will be her mother. We will be a family.”
