Jill Duggar’s husband, Derick Dillard, recently responded to a question about whether she will be making a pregnancy announcement soon. His pregnancy update came just days before El Salvador officials reminded women living in the country that it’s a dangerous time to get pregnant.
Both fans and critics of the Duggar family have expressed concerns about Jill getting pregnant while she is in El Salvador doing mission work. These fears stem from the Duggar family’s aversion to birth control and the spread of the Zika virus, a mosquito-borne disease that can cause a devastating birth defect called microcephaly. The rare neurological condition is marked by an abnormally small head, which can cause newborns with the birth defect to suffer from severe developmental issues.
According to Fox News, El Salvador officials have just confirmed their country’s first case of microcephaly linked to the Zika virus.

As BBC News reports, over 6,000 suspected cases of the Zika virus have been reported since its existence in El Salvador was confirmed, and it’s become such a huge problem that the government’s health ministry is recommending women avoid getting pregnant for the next year. However, Jill Duggar and Derick Dillard have not said that they are going to delay their next pregnancy due to the virus, and Derick possibly hinted that Jill is already pregnant in response to a fan’s question about their pregnancy plans.
“So when will you announce Jill’s pregnancy?” one of Derick’s Twitter followers asked him on June 6.

Derick answered the question seven days later on June 13, and he did not deny that Jill Duggar is planning on making a pregnancy announcement in the near future. Instead, Derick responded by writing that he’s “not sure yet.”
One of Derick’s Twitter followers speculated that he and Jill aren’t ready to make a pregnancy announcement because they’re still waiting to hear from TLC. The network has not announced whether it plans on bringing Jill & Jessa: Counting On back for a second season, and the Duggars often use their pregnancy announcements to promote their reality shows.
As Radar Online reports, Jessa Duggar revealed that she was pregnant with her first child in a video that aired during her 19 Kids and Counting honeymoon special. It seems as though Jessa also had a deal with People magazine, which announced her pregnancy earlier in the day.
As People reports, Jill Duggar and her sister have already talked about the possibility of getting pregnant at the same time, but Jill believes that she will beat Jessa to having a second baby.
“I think we will probably be pregnant at the same time,” Jill said during the Jill & Jessa: Counting On season finale. “But to say who will be first, well Israel is older… so we will see.”
Jill and Jessa both expressed a desire to adopt, but Derick said that he was pretty certain that he and Jill’s next child would be a biological one.
“It will probably be a naturalized citizen of the family,” Derick told the TLC cameras.
As the Stir reports, some critics of the Duggar family believe that Jill and Jessa Duggar are trying to get pregnant at the same time. Jill & Jessa: Counting On suffered an exodus of advertisers last season, so it’s possible that TLC will simply decide that they Duggars aren’t worth the trouble and will pull the plug on the second season of the reality series. However, there’s speculation that Jill and Jessa think that getting pregnant at the same time will tempt TLC to give them at least one more chance at being on TV.
Perhaps Derick is also trying to use the possibility of a pregnancy to save Jill & Jessa: Counting On. It could be telling that he chose to answer a fan’s Twitter inquiry about his baby plans while ignoring questions about how the money donated towards his mission trip is being spent and if it’s possible to help the impoverished women of El Salvador by purchasing their handmade jewelry online.
