Anthony Kiedis And James Corden: Naked And Wrestling During Red Hot Chili Peppers ‘Carpool Karaoke’ [Video]
The Red Hot Chili Peppers were James Corden’s co-conspirators in the latest installation of “Carpool Karaoke.” The Late Late Show host was riled up and revving to go — even going shirtless at one point, according to People. Judging by Corden’s enthusiasm, he is a big fan and it was clear it wasn’t his first time jamming to the band’s music.
“People say don’t meet your heroes, but I don’t think they ever met the Red Hot Chili Peppers.”
Red Hot Chili Pepper frontman Anthony Kiedis was joined by bassist Flea, drummer Chad Smith, and guitarist Josh Klinghoffer in the drive around their Los Angeles haunts. The shenanigans started out normally enough; beginning with “Can’t Stop,” Corden and Flea seamlessly went into “Food Glorious Food” from Oliver!
“Give It Away” gave way to a racy conversation about what he had to “give to your momma and poppa” which culminated into some mosh pit worthy writhing — while Corden was driving. The audience was treated to “By the Way,” “Californication,” and “Under the Boardwalk” while the English funnyman and the band members discussed how Anthony Kiedis and Flea met, and how the one-and-only Cher used to babysit Kiedis.
At one point, they talked about being in the woods when they were teenagers and smoking large quantities of marijuana while hiking and singing, and one has to wonder if they hadn’t smoked something during the ride. Kiedis mentioned that he wanted to be a wrestler before he got into the band and James Corden took that as an immediate challenge. He parked the car at a stranger’s home, and they wrestled on their pristine lawn with Corden laughing the entire time.

Corden stated he barely recognized them with their clothes on and Kiedis took this as a cue to go shirtless. Off went his shoes and socks and Corden and Flea played along. The Red Hot Chili Peppers admitted their California upbringing made clothing feel unnatural, then “Carpool Karaoke” continued with “The Zephyr Song.” Any RHCP fan knows they have exhibitionist tendencies — we were lucky they stopped at their shirts.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famers are aging well. They still look and sound vibrant, which has been a point of concern ever since they had to cancel a concert due to Kiedis’ recent hospitalization for intestinal flu. The Red Hot Chili Peppers are getting good reviews for their recent “Dark Necessities” track from their new album, The Getaway, which will release June 17, and the newest track “We Turn Red” was released June 9. The band’s 33 years together can be attributed to the bromance between Kiedis and Flea and their ability to co-create art through their pain. Their original guitarist, Hillel Slovak, died from heroin overdose in 1988, and drug abuse was, as with most rock bands, a fact of life.
“Carpool Karaoke” is a regular feature on the Late Late Show, and it is probably the most popular segment on the show. James Corden succeeded fellow British comedian Craig Ferguson’s 10-year run in 2015 and has revived the show in the short time he has been the host.
The Red Hot Chili Pepper’s upcoming album The Getaway is set to drop June 17 and they are currently embarking on the European leg of The Getaway Tour.
