#PrayForWeezy Trends As ‘Lean’ Drink Blamed By Fans: Could Lil Wayne Die From Codeine?

Lil Wayne’s condition has caused #PrayForWeezy to begin trending on Twitter, with nearly 9,000 tweets from people using the hashtag appearing on the social networking site. As reported by MTV News as seen in their below tweet, Weezy — one of Wayne’s nicknames — suffered seizures on a private flight that forced an emergency landing.

Fans using the #PrayForWeezy hashtag are writing their emotional pleas for Wayne not to die. Plenty of those fans are mentioning Weezy’s love of drinking lean, a codeine cough syrup drink.

As reported by the Inquisitr, Wayne sang of his love of “sipping lean” from a glass in his song “CoCo.” But what exactly is lean — and could the drink have caused Weezy’s seizures? Has lean ever killed anyone who drank too much of it? When rapper A$AP Yams died, there were reports of the lean drink possibly being responsible for his death, which his cohort shot down.

However, once toxicology reports for Steven “A$AP Yams” Rodriguez were revealed, it was determined that a combination of drugs — such as opiates and benzodiazepine like Xanax — were a factor in his death, as reported by The New York Times. Only two days prior to his death, Yams tweeted “Bodeine Brazy,” thought to mean Codeine crazy.

Lean or “Sizzurp” is a drink generally sipped out of white cups containing promethazine with Codeine mixed with Sprite or other substances, according to the Urban Dictionary.

As recently as May of this year, a rapper named Curren$y was blaming Weezy’s lean for nearly killing him, reports TMZ. Later, Curren$y would admit he was joking, but also admitted that after downing the strong concotion, he slept for 18 straight hours. Weezy did overdose on lean in 2013. The publication notes that Wayne has been spotted with his lean white cup in his hands this year.

Lean is a drink that Drake rapped about in DJ Khaled’s popular song, “I’m On One.”

“Two white cups and I got that drink
Could be purple, it could be pink
Depending on how you mix that s***”

As noted by Genius, lean became popular in the southern regions of the U.S. but packs a wallop because of the strength of the cough syrup used.

“Famous concoction, popular in the South, is a mixture of prescription strength codeine-promethazine cough syrup and Sprite. It is referred to as purple drank, lean, barre, and syrup (or sizzurp.) The variation between purple and pink comes from whether or not you ‘mix that s***.’ The Sprite lightens the color of the purple syrup, making it pink, typically when there’s less syrup. The current debate on Twitter is whether or not the dreaded lean drink is responsible for Weezy’s seizures or not. Well, according to the Village Voice, lean has not helped the health of many rappers. In fact, the publication blames lean for killing several Houston rappers — with lean nearly causing Lil Wayne’s death in past years.

“The difference here is that lean is not just killing rap fans — it’s killing rap artists themselves. Out of Houston alone, the deaths of DJ Screw, Big Moe and Pimp C were all tied to syrup use. A lean addiction nearly killed Lil Wayne; at the very least it contributed to him getting eight root canals, which is as bad as death.”

As seen in the top photo, Weezy performed at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Friday, September 18, 2015.

With news about Wayne — or “Tunechi,” as is one of Weezy’s other nicknames — having seizures serious enough to cause emergency landings, fans are hoping that Lil Wayne isn’t the next celebrity to die in 2016.
