‘Naked Restaurant’ In Japan Tells Overweight Diners To Stay Out

The first “naked restaurant” in Japan is set to open soon and the restaurant is making it clear that overweight diners are not welcome. According to a report from the AFP via CTV News, the aforementioned Japanese restaurant is called “The Amrita” and it is scheduled to open next month (July 29) in Tokyo.

As previously mentioned, the “naked restaurant” will have a very interesting entry requirement. Those who want to taste the dishes of Amrita must meet the following conditions: they eat naked and be weighed and measured at the entrance. The reason? If guests are deemed to be overweight, they will not be allowed entry, and the price of the reservation will not be refunded.

“If you are more than 15 kilos [33lb] above the average weight for your height, we ask you refrain from making a reservation,” regulations published on the restaurant’s website explain. The guests who appear to be overweight will be asked to go to the scales. The rules advise those who wish to eat there to weigh themselves ahead of dining at Amrita, RT wrote.

Other rules of the restaurant are that is highly forbidden to touch people and tattooed patrons will not be allowed entry. Diners must also leave their phones at the door to abstain from conversations with others.

The established age to enter ranges from 18 years to 60. Unlike other nudist restaurants in London or Melbourne, diners at Amrita will be issued light garments made of paper to cover their intimate areas.

But this is not all, since the restaurant offers a banquet and show with dancers, guests will have to pay as much as 80,000 yen ($750) for tickets entitling them to eat the food, which is served by muscle-bound men wearing g-strings. Rocket News wrote that the Japanese “naked restaurant” is already quite popular, with a number of tickets for the dinner and show event already sold out.

Regular restaurant reservations not including the show can be purchased for 14,000 yen, 18,000 yen or 28,000 yen, depending on the course menu selected, the article reads. According to information on the restaurant’s official homepage, both types of reservations will be available on the nights of 29, 30 and 31 July. While the site also says the location of the restaurant will be revealed to diners by confirmation email, the “Japan Preparation Office” is currently listed at 3-13-14 Azabu Juban, Minato-ku, Tokyo. It remains to be seen as to whether this will be a regular event or one that lasts for only a few days. The restaurant is expected to release further details regarding this matter as the opening date nears.

This is not the first time that this concept has been presented and just recently London welcomed their first naked restaurant. As reported by Mail Online, London’s first naked restaurant — which boasts 46,000 people on its waiting list — opened its doors last week in a secret location in southeast London. The head chef of London’s newest out-there dining experience said he hoped that being nude will help diners concentrate on their food and encourage them to try new cuisines. Only open for three months, Bunyadi claims it offers “pure liberation,” offering the experience of eating in its “purest” form. The Bunyadi is the branchild of Seb Lyall, a restaurateur behind last year’s “Breaking Bad” bar.

Speaking with The Washington Post, Lyall had the following to say about his clothes-free restaurant.

“When you get a chance, you take your clothes off,” Lyall said. “When you get in bed, you take your clothes off. When you go to the beach or a sauna, you take your clothes off. It’s natural.”
