According to Fox News, the 48-year-old actor and a friend launched their boats from Cold Spring Harbor on Saturday afternoon but got lost as the sky darkened and were forced to beach their kayaks in Huntington Bay, almost 10 miles east from where they had set out.

Thankfully for Crowe, the USCG was patrolling the area and heard the Gladiator star call out to them from the shore around 10 pm local time, US Coast Guard Petty Officer Robert Swieciki told the AP.

Swieciki says that Crowe — currently in the process of filming Noah, Darren Aronofsky’s upcoming biblical epic — then swam up to the boat and officers pulled the actor and his friend out of the water. They were then taken to Huntington Harbor.

“He just needed a little bit of help, he just got a little lost…It wasn’t really a rescue, really, more of just giving someone a lift,” Swieciki told the media.

Russell, who wasn’t recognized by the USGC crew until he was pulled aboard thier vessel, later took to Twitter to thank his assisters.

Crowe wrote:

Russell, who starred in Master And Commander: The Far Side of the World as Captain “Lucky Jack” Aubrey in 2003, later popped back on Twitter to inform his fans that he was never “lost” during his kayak outing.

Crowe tweeted:
