Insider Claims ‘The Last Of Us 2’ Won’t Be Announced At E3

Over the last several months, there have been rumors that Naughty Dog is going to announce the sequel to 2013’s The Last of Us at this coming week’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3); but, according to an industry insider, that’s not going to happen.

Speaking on the latest episode of Video Game Sophistry, the aforementioned industry insider, who goes by the name Shinobi602, suggests that Naughty Dog is prototyping The Last of Us 2, but he makes it clear that the game will not be announced anytime soon.

“I think [Naughty Dog] is definitely dabbling in [The Last of Us 2], but I don’t think we’ll see it at E3. I think they’ll probably have some prototypes going of that, I’ll say that much.”

Following the launch of the first game, Neil Druckmann, who is Naughty Dog’s creative director, said that there was a 50/50 chance of a sequel. In subsequent interviews, Druckmann admitted that he and his partner Bruce Straley had been working on prototypes for The Last of Us 2 before they were asked to begin working on Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.

It seems more likely that Naughty Dog will reveal Uncharted 4’s single player downloadable content at E3, as that is set to become available later this summer.

There have been several reports suggesting that Naughty Dog won’t officially reveal anything about The Last of Us 2 until next year. So, it looks like TLOU 2 will probably be announced at next year’s E3.

We do know a second game is coming, but what we don’t know is what the plot of it will be. As many know by now, there is a poster in the epilogue of Uncharted 4 that shows a pregnant woman with a gas mask on, and the text on the poster reads, “The Last of Us: American Daughters.” Naughty Dog has clearly put that in the game for a reason.

The hint at a Last of Us sequel in Uncharted 4 isn’t the first time that the gaming studio has hinted at their next project, as they hinted at the first Last of Us game in Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception in the opening scene of the game.

The photo above shows a newspaper headline that can be found in the bar during the opening scene of Uncharted 3, and it clearly hints at The Last of Us, which was released 2-years after the third Uncharted game.

The “American Daughters” poster has led many to believe that we’re either going to be seeing a pregnant Ellie in The Last of Us 2, or that the second game will be a prequel, which will feature Ellie’s mom, who will be pregnant with Ellie in the game, and the story will explain how Ellie was able to become immune to the infection.

Of course, most of the fans of the first game do want to see both Joel and Ellie return in the sequel, and Naughty Dog clearly knows that. So, we’ll probably see the two characters in some form in the second game, even if they’re not the game’s main characters.

Naughty Dog has intertwined some backstory along with the main story in the last two Uncharted games, and they may do the same thing with The Last of Us 2. So, we could get a pregnant Ellie, Ellie’s mom, Joel, and much more in the sequel. But, the game’s plot still remains to be seen.
