Top-ranked Roger Federer of Switzerland cruised past Spain’s Fernando Verdasco in just two hours and two minutes in the third round of the US Open on Saturday.

Playing in near-tropical conditions, Federer hardly broke a sweat as he ousted Verdasco 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 to capture his eighth consecutive straight-sets victory.

“Today honestly wasn’t hot at all for me,” Federer said about the conditions out on court. “Bit of a breeze. It almost cools you down a bit. For me anyway it was no problem.”

The Gant Daily points out that Federer, who is seeking his sixth US Open title, faced just one break point in the match.

In his three matches in the 2012 Open, Roger has faced only three break points, has been broken only once, and has yet to lose more than four games in a set.

“I had no clue my stats were that good coming in to net,” said Federer after the match. “I really tried to play offensive against Bjorn Phau in my second round match. I think that gave me the confidence to move forward today.”

Federer next will take on American Mardy Fish, who defeated Gilles Simon of France 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-3.

Meanwhile, second seed and defending Open champion Novak Djokovic ousted France’s Julien Benneteau in straight sets on Sunday to secure his spot in the US Open fourth round for the sixth straight year in a row.

Djokovic, who has not lost a set during the tournament, will next face 14th seed Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine or 18th seed Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland.
