‘Ugly Betty’ Channels Her Inner ‘Gilmore Girl’ To Discuss Reunion On Hulu As ‘Betty’ Cast Gathers For ATX Festival

The cast of Ugly Betty reunited Saturday night for a panel at the annual ATX Television Festival according to Entertainment Weekly. Ugly Betty herself, American Ferrera, joined fellow cast mates Vanessa Williams, Rebecca Romijn, and Eric Mabius among others onstage for a Q and A session in front of a packed house.

While fans were excited to get the group of quirky Betty stars back under the same roof (with the exception of Becky Newton who had to bow out do to a case of pneumonia), it was a flippant remark made by Ugly Betty headliner America Ferrara that got the most raucous applause.

According to Deadline, Ferrera jokingly made a remark about Ugly Betty getting a two-hour movie special on television streaming service Hulu. While fans went bananas for a possible revival of Betty, Ferrara admitted she was joking. But that didn’t stop America from urging fans to take to Twitter to start a campaign to make their Ugly Betty dreams come true.

And the idea of an Ugly Betty revival, even if it’s just one short made-for-TV movie, might not be as far-fetched as one would think. Just last year, the cast of Gilmore Girls were gathered at ATX for a reunion and panel session quite similar to this year’s Ugly Betty gathering. Both the cast and creator of Gilmore Girls admitted that they didn’t get to end the show the way they had hoped to and hinted that everyone was on board for a revival to give the Girls a proper send off. Before the end of the year, Netflix stepped in.

Netflix had been experiencing the fruits of the former Gilmore Girls labor as they had started streaming the series. While Netflix is well known for its original content, they had also just put together a revival of eighties darling Full House and despite mixed reviews, nostalgia won. Netflix considered it might be on to something so when the Gilmore Girls mentioned the thrill of getting back together, Netflix jumped at the chance and signed the Gilmore Girls on for a four-part movie series. Though it has yet to air, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life just finished filming with all original cast members (with the exception of the late Ed Hermann) on board.

So is it possible that Ugly Betty could channel its inner Gilmore Girls and truly get a revival done?

Netflix doesn’t currently stream the Ugly Betty, but Hulu does which, could be the reason American Ferrara tried to give a shout out to them. While Hulu’s original content may not be as well known as Netflix, it did offer a lifeline to the cult favorite The Mindy Project when it was cancelled by network television. In the recent group of cancelled television series, Rob Lowe’s The Grinder and ABC‘s The Family both were looking to Hulu to show some mercy and give second seasons a chance. Perhaps the shout out from the Ugly Betty cast was all that Hulu needs to get the creative juices flowing.

The call for a revival prompted the hashtag to surface oo Twitter, #HuluBringBackUglyBetty, and much like rabid Gilmore Girls fans were last year, Twitter users were quick to jump on the Ugly Betty bandwagon.

Even America Ferrera tried to spread the Ugly Betty love to Hulu.

And even if Ugly Betty doesn’t get the two-hour reunion movie it was hoping for, ATX was also able to get another nugget of joy from America Ferrera. Last year, Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez discussed how much she would love for Ferrera to make an appearance on the show as ‘Ugly Betty’ and Ferrera’s response was favorable according to at tweet from ATX’s official account.

At the very least, fans can hope that if Ugly Betty star America Ferrera gets together with real life bff Gilmore Girl Alexis Bledel and they share their mystical Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, magic will happen, dreams will come true, and Ugly Betty fans can get together with Gilmore Girls fans and rejoice over the return of some of their favorite female television characters.
