Sarah Palin Shows Support For Daughter Bristol’s Secret Marriage To Dakota Meyer

Sarah Palin seems to have changed her tune regarding the man who is now her son-in-law. Sarah Palin and her husband, Todd Palin, released a joint statement posted to Facebook, revealing that they are “stratospherically happy” that their daughter Bristol tied the knot with Dakota Meyer, the father of her 5-month-old daughter, Sailor Grace.

“All our families’ hearts are filled with love for Dakota, Bristol, Tripp, and Sailor Grace,” the Palin parents wrote. “It’s been a rewarding and interesting ride this past year—but these two sure do love an adventure! As their biggest supporters, we’re stratospherically happy it’s happened, amidst running a little late! Like they said, the foundation of their new life together is built with hard work and God’s grace, so they can’t go wrong—their future is as bright as Alaska’s midnight sun.”

Last May, Bristol Palin famously split from her fiancé just days before their scheduled wedding in Kentucky. Less than two months later, Bristol revealed she was pregnant. The exes embarked in a bitter custody battle early on, and Sarah Palin publicly slammed Dakota.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight in January, Sarah Palin said her daughter’s ex-fiance “wanted nothing to do with either Bristol’s pregnancy or the baby.” Sarah accused Meyer, a Marine Corps veteran and Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, of trying to “save face” by accepting responsibility for the child and filing for joint custody. Meyer also reportedly requested child support.

“For many months we have been trying to reach out to Dakota Meyer and he has wanted nothing to do with either Bristol’s pregnancy or the baby,” Sarah said at the time.

Bristol Palin’s rep, David Martin, slammed Meyer even further, saying, “My values are such that a real American hero doesn’t ask for child support.”

But things quickly changed for the former couple after Meyer was granted monthly visitation rights in Alaska. In recent weeks, the duo’s chummy posts — both with and without their daughter — made it clear that there was more than just cordial co-parenting going on.

Then, earlier this week, Palin and Meyer issued a statement to Entertainment Tonight, in which they said they are happy to share the news that they secretly got married and are on their honeymoon.

“Life is full of ups and downs but in the end, you’ll end up where you’re supposed to be,” the newlyweds said. “We are so happy to share with loved ones the wonderful news that we got married! Hard work and God’s grace are the foundation of our new life together, and with the love and support of our family we know we can get through anything.”

Bristol Palin, who was already a single mom to a 7-year-old son, Tripp, previously admitted on her Patheos.com blog that her second pregnancy was a huge disappointment to her family and friends even though the baby was actually planned with Meyer before their split. But in an interview with CBS’ Sunday Morning, Sarah Palin said she considered the baby to be a blessing.

“My heart goes out to the single parents,” Sarah said last fall, “But my enormous admiration for what it is that they’re able to accomplish doing double-duty. And I watch Bristol do double-duty all the time, you know, with her little boy, Tripp. I can’t wait for about 45 more days, and I’m gonna have a little baby granddaughter – and I’m happy about it.”

Sarah Palin also had a message for those who point out that having a baby out of wedlock is against everything she stands for.

“Well, the cool thing about puttin’ your faith in God is, He certainly is a God of second chances – and third, and fourth and fifth chances,” Sarah said. “I screw up all the time.”
