Hal David, the iconic songwriter who wrote hits such as “Raindrops Keep Fallin” along with Burt Bacharach, passed away on Saturday in Los Angeles hospital, The New York Times reports. David was 91.

David reportedly died due to complications resulting from a stroke. The songwriter’s wife, Eunice, told the Times that David was being treated at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. David is survived by Eunice, sons Jim and Craig, three grandchildren, and two stepsons.

David and Bacharach wrote their first hit, “The STory of My Life”, in 1957, which was recorded by Marty Robbins. The songwriting duo hit big again with “Magic Moments”, which was made popular by Perry Como.

Together with Bacharach, David went on to co-write an astonishing number of hits in the 60s and 70s, with his lyrics being performed by the likes of Tom Jones, Dusty Springfield, The Carpenters, and a whole lot more. David was inducted in to the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1972, and has received an Oscar and a Grammy for his work.

Early May, both David and Bacharach were honored by President Barack Obama with the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. A concert in their honor was held shortly after, with stars like Sheryl Crow, Diana Krall and Stevie Wonder singing their tunes.

David was unable to attend, but Bacharach told CBS News at the time that he felt truly honored, and that the honor “may top his Academy Awards.”

You can watch Sheryl Crow perform “Walk On By” at the concert below.
